Introducing Asmara

Architectural History & Theory

Essay

Date

March 2021

Situated at the tip of an escarpment at over 2300m above sea level, where rich history faces remarkable modernity, lies the city of Asmara. Located in the Horn of Africa, the modern city of Asmara, Eritrea, was constructed between 1936 and 41 during Italian fascist rule.

This essay delves into the colonial past, through the various urban planning techniques and maps produced by various sources. These maps had implications both on the native people of Eritrea and the colonising force, acquiring similar characteristics, either culturally or physically to many near by colonised African states.
